In the United States, philosophy of the liberating animals took shape in the mid 1970's with the publication of a book entitled Animal Liberation. In this publication, author Peter Singer questioned the moral status of animals in relation to humans. Ever since, animal rights liberation activists have fought for what they believe is the moral high ground in the liberation of animals. The result has been a splintering of radical animal rights activists and those who take a more passive role. The radical animal rights factions, although hanging onto Singer’s ideology of non-violence, have been blamed for bombings, deaths, and multiple incidents of violence worldwide. This report focuses mostly on this splinter group. It also addresses the animal rights ideology and how it creates a platform on which radical animal rights activists claim authority for their actions.
